Areca Nut Smuggling via Mizoram Causes Rs 409 Crore Customs Loss: ED

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) revealed that smuggling of dry areca nuts from Myanmar through Mizoram caused a customs duty loss of Rs 408.90 crore. The investigation, initially registered by the CBI in Imphal in 2025, found about 3,103 MT of smuggled areca nuts valued at Rs 1,022.25 crore. The smuggling network used the Tiau river and unfenced border near Zokhawthar, with local facilitators aiding transport to Assam and beyond.

The Museum Police registered a case against Thiruvananthapuram Mayor V.V. Rajesh, Corporation secretary, and BJP councillor R. Sugathan for allegedly forging Sugathan’s signature in the Corporation council attendance register. The forgery was to falsely show Sugathan’s presence at meetings on February 26, March 11, and April 27, which he missed while in hiding due to a police case. The complaint was filed by LDF leader S.P. Deepak.
