HealthWoman Dies of Plague in Siberia's Irkutsk Region
A 28-year-old laboratory technician, Darya Shipilova, died of plague in the remote Siberian Irkutsk region, according to a regional official. She worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute and may have contracted pneumonic plague from a broken test tube. Around 200 people who had contact with her are under quarantine. The plague is a bacterial infectious disease, with pneumonic plague being highly contagious and potentially fatal if untreated.
