Virginia Reuses 100,000 Tons of Bridge Concrete for Fish Habitat
Virginia's Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel expansion project is repurposing about 100,000 tons of demolished bridge concrete into artificial reefs to support marine life. So far, 951 tons have been placed underwater. Managed by the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, this initiative reduces landfill waste and enhances local fisheries and ecosystems, with completion expected by 2027.
