In Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh, protests against the proposed 11,200 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) turned violent. On Friday night, rioters set fire to the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) office and a police station. Homes of BJP state president and three leaders were vandalized and looted. The central government deployed two CRPF Rapid Action Force companies to control the situation. The project faces opposition due to concerns linked to China's mega dam in Tibet and local issues.
