Underwater Sound System Keeps Grey Seals Away from Swimmers in Germany
A study at Helgoland Dune, Germany's largest grey seal colony, found that underwater sound signals effectively kept grey seals away from designated swimming areas. Researchers tested an acoustic deterrent to reduce encounters between marine wildlife and swimmers without restricting the seals' access to their natural habitat. The system encouraged seals to stay farther from popular swimming zones.
