UK Government Introduces New Rules for Permanent Settlement
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced new rules for obtaining indefinite leave to remain (ILR) in the UK after a public consultation with 200,000 responses. The settlement period will shift from 5 to 10 years for most migrants, requiring no criminal record, high English proficiency, no government debt, and at least three years of National Insurance contributions. The 5-year route remains for those earning over £50,000 and certain professionals like doctors, nurses, teachers, and care workers.
