PoliticsTexas Couple Refused National Park, Got $55,000 and Lifetime Home
In the 1960s, Walter and Bertha Glover, owners of a roadside store and café near Pine Springs, Texas, opposed the creation of Guadalupe Mountains National Park, authorized by Congress in 1966. Despite owning 4,000 acres, the park sought only 80 acres including Pine Springs Canyon. The Glovers resisted the park proposal, eventually receiving $55,000 and lifetime home rights in a federal settlement.
