TB Preventive Treatment Protection May Wane After One Year in High-Burden Countries

A study published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine found that tuberculosis preventive treatment (TPT) provides strong protection during the first 12-24 months after treatment. However, in high-burden countries, this protection may start to wane after just one year. In contrast, protection lasts at least eight to thirteen years in medium and low-burden countries. TPT uses antibiotics to prevent latent TB infections from becoming active disease.
