Supreme Court Rules Protesters Cannot Occupy Sites Indefinitely
The Supreme Court of India ruled that no group, political party, NGO, or civil society organization can occupy a protest site indefinitely. The bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, highlighted the conflict between the right to free speech and the right to carry on trade. The court asked a traders’ association seeking Rs 1,000 crore in damages from protests to include protest organizers in the case to determine compensation. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta emphasized that those calling protests must compensate for losses caused.
