The Supreme Court ruled that once disproportionate assets are prima facie established against a public servant, the accused must provide a satisfactory explanation or face adverse inference. The court clarified that the prosecution only needs to prove known income and assets. The burden then shifts to the accused to explain any unexplained assets, as these fall within their special knowledge. This was stated while dismissing an appeal by former Kerala sub-registrar V Gopalakrishnan.
