SciencePhoto: Mongabay IndiaStudy Reveals Rising Fire Rates in Eastern Ghats Wildlife Reserves
A new study by the Centre for Wildlife Studies analyzed fire regimes in 13 Indian wildlife reserves across three landscapes from 2002 to 2022. It found the burned area increased most sharply in the Eastern Ghats at 9.3% per year, due to a fire-prone mix of vegetation, climate, and human ignition. Human and climate factors explained 21-77% of fire activity, with drought and community fire use playing key regional roles. Population density influenced fire frequency in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh reserves.
