HealthStudy Finds Lung Cancer Risk High in Non-Smokers Due to EGFR Mutation
A global study of over 3.3 million people reveals that lung cancer affects 20% of patients who never smoked. Researchers identified a rare inherited EGFR mutation that increases lung cancer risk up to 25 times in general and 60 times in non-smokers. The mutation causes abnormal cell growth via fusion proteins, challenging the belief that smoking is the sole cause. This finding may change lung cancer screening protocols to include genetic risk.
