The New World screwworm parasite was detected for the first time in Arizona, found in a dog in Cochise County, according to the US Department of Agriculture. Since June, 71 cases have been reported in the US, mostly in Texas and New Mexico. The parasite, which burrows into animal wounds, poses a threat to livestock and wildlife, raising concerns among ranchers as cattle shipments from Mexico resume.
