A 28-year-old laboratory technician, Darya Shipilova, died of pneumonic plague in the Siberian region of Irkutsk, Russia, after accidentally breaking a test tube with live bacteria at the Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov. She was hospitalized on September 29 and died on October 1. Over 200 contacts are quarantined, five hospitals closed, and public events canceled amid the outbreak.
