New Fuel-Efficiency Norms for Cars Effective April 2027

The Indian government has notified new fuel-efficiency norms called Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE-III) for cars, effective from April 1, 2027, to March 31, 2032. These norms aim to improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions by encouraging manufacturers to produce cleaner vehicles like electric and hybrid cars. The fuel consumption benchmark will tighten from 3.996 to 3.3273 litres per 100 km, a 16.7% improvement over five years, applied at the manufacturer level across eligible vehicles.
