Maine's Penobscot River Dam Removal Boosts River Herring to 5.85 Million
Maine's removal of the Great Works and Veazie dams on the Penobscot River in 2012 and 2013 restored migratory routes for fish. By September 2026, the Milford fish lift recorded a preliminary count of 5.85 million river herring returning upstream, a significant increase from just 556 before the dam removals, marking a major ecological success.
