Italian Priest Funded Brazilian Infrastructure by Selling Piranhas
In the 1970s, Italian Jesuit priest Giovanni Gallo moved to Marajó Island, Brazil, and sold 12,000 piranhas to Europe. The proceeds funded community infrastructure including 350 meters of bridges, an 800-meter airstrip, a cemetery, and a dock. Gallo also founded the Museu do Marajó to preserve local history and archaeology.
