ScienceIndia's Forests Provide Vital Ecological and Economic Benefits
India's forests absorb nearly 700 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, valued at Rs 6.5 lakh crore, according to the Forest Survey of India. They support biodiversity, conserve soil and moisture, regulate water flow, and ensure food security and livelihoods. Forested catchments provide purer water compared to industrial or agricultural areas. Despite these benefits, forest ecosystem services are often overlooked in policy and economic decisions, causing natural capital loss and investment misallocation.
