Florida Burmese Pythons Carry Three New RNA Viruses
Researchers studying Burmese pythons in Florida's Everglades discovered three previously unknown RNA viruses: an alphavirus, a hepacivirus, and an arterivirus. The study, published in the Journal of Virology, examined 40 pythons near a 2020 disease outbreak among eastern mudsnakes. Although the ferlavirus linked to that outbreak was absent, a known serpentovirus was detected. Further research is needed to assess if these viruses can infect native snakes.
