PoliticsElephant Attack Highlights Concerns Over Roerich Estate Tourism Project
The recent fatal elephant attack on an elderly man has renewed scrutiny of the tourism department's project at Roerich and Devikarani estate in Bengaluru. The estate serves as a crucial elephant corridor and habitat, with railway barricades being erected around two lakes vital to elephants. The forest department had planned to declare the 460-acre estate a conservation reserve in 2017. The Rs 55-crore eco-tourism project includes barricading 170 acres of forest and two lakes to keep elephants out. Tourism secretary Ram Prasath Manohar has promised to investigate.
