COP17 Ends with Biodiversity Funding Consensus but Weak Conservation Commitments
The 17th Conference of Parties (COP17) to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity concluded in Yerevan, Armenia, after 24 hours of intense negotiations. While consensus was reached on biodiversity financing and benefit sharing, commitments on conservation and indigenous rights were weakened. Controversies included opposition to phasing out harmful subsidies and disputes over indigenous peoples' nomination rights. Only 25% of ecosystem restoration targets were met by the conference's end.
