Chinese Scientists Discover Giant 20-Inch Fungus Weighing Nearly Five Pounds
Scientists in Yunnan, China, have discovered a giant fungus named Dianjunus rex, or D-rex, growing from the roots of Chinese cork oak trees. Measuring nearly 20 inches tall and weighing about five pounds, it is the largest known fruiting body in the Ascomycota phylum. Genetic analysis suggests its lineage dates back around 65 million years, challenging previous understanding of fungal size.
