Chemical Signal Helps Naked Mole-Rat Queens Suppress Female Reproduction
Naked mole-rat queens use a chemical signal, isopropyl myristate (IPM), to prevent other females in the colony from reproducing. A study published in Nature found that queens have much higher levels of IPM compared to non-breeding members. Removing this chemical leads to fights among females, highlighting its role in maintaining social order.
