Since 2018, California has been converting 1,187 acres of former dairy and grazing land in the Delta near Oakley into tidal marsh to create safe habitats for young salmon. This project, known as Dutch Slough, was the Delta's largest tidal wetland restoration until surpassed by the 3,400-acre Lookout Slough in 2024. The restoration aims to improve survival rates of endangered fish and wildlife as part of California EcoRestore.
