The Allahabad High Court has stayed the conviction and sentence of Nandlal Rai, convicted in a 2017 murder case, allowing him to contest the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. The two-judge bench noted Rai's political background as a BJP worker and granted him bail. The original conviction was by the Varanasi sessions court in 2025 for a case registered at Sigra police station.
