The 2026 US midterm elections are predicted to be less competitive than those in 2018 and 2022, according to Ballotpedia's State Legislative Competitiveness Index, which is 35.4 for 2026 compared to 36.6 in 2022 and 36.1 in 2018. The share of open seats has dropped from 23.8% in 2022 to 17.3% in 2026. Historically, incumbents have a high re-election rate, averaging 92.2% between 2010 and 2022, making fewer open seats advantageous for the party in power, currently the Republicans.
