Zika Virus Sexual Transmission Risk Requires Attention

The Zika virus, primarily spread by Aedes mosquitoes, can also be transmitted sexually as it remains in an infected man's semen for up to two to three months. While typical symptoms last a week, the virus persists longer in semen, posing risks to sexual health and pregnancy. CDC recommends condom use or abstinence for 2-3 months after exposure. A 2026 study found the virus clears in 57 days on average, but rare cases last beyond 180 days.
