The World Bank's October 2026 Poverty and Equity Brief reveals India lifted 496 million people out of poverty between 2011 and 2023, reducing the population below the $4.20/day income line from 57.7% to 16.1%. Extreme poverty dropped from 27.1% to 2.6%. Despite progress, issues like low labor productivity, rising youth unemployment, income inequality, and geographically concentrated poverty require urgent attention. Employment grew by 134 million from 2017 to 2023, led by rural women, but job quality remains a concern.
