The World Bank's October 2026 India Development Update reports that AI has not reduced total IT jobs in 10 cities surveyed across 651 companies, but 55% of firms cut new hiring. Mid-level hiring fell in 25% of firms, senior-level in 14%. Adjustments occurred mainly through slower hiring, not mass layoffs. Routine tasks like coding and testing, often done by freshers, are most affected. Large IT firms cut 64,000 jobs, while others added 700,000, raising total IT employment to 4.4 million.
