World Bank Projects India's Poverty Rate to Drop to 12.1% by 2028
The World Bank forecasts India's poverty rate, measured at $4.2 a day, will decrease from 14.2% in 2026 to 12.1% by 2028. From 2011 to 2023, poverty fell from 57.7% to 16.1%, lifting 496 million people out of poverty. Extreme poverty dropped from 27.1% to 2.6%. Progress was driven by consumption growth, rising employment, especially among women, and expanded social transfers. Wage disparities remain significant. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman praised the rapid poverty decline under PM Narendra Modi's leadership.
