SciencePhoto: NDTVWoman Promotes Smoke-Free Diwali with Green Crackers and Cold Fireworks
Nine years ago, Delhi faced severe air pollution after Diwali, prompting a challenge from Dr Harsh Vardhan, then Union Minister for Science and Environment, to develop environmentally friendly fireworks. This led to the creation of 'green crackers' that produce 25-30% less particulate matter and 50% less sulfur dioxide and NOx. These crackers cost 15-30% less and can be produced by existing Indian industries supporting 5 lakh workers and a Rs 6000 crore economy.
