ScienceWhy Pen Caps Have a Hole: Safety Design Explained
Many ballpoint pen caps have a tiny hole at the top, designed to allow air passage. This feature reduces the risk of asphyxiation if the cap is accidentally inhaled. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 11540:2021 mandates this safety design, especially for pens used by children up to 14 years old. The hole helps prevent suffocation but does not make swallowing or inhaling the cap safe.
