WhatsApp and Telegram to Require Active SIM from January 1, 2027

Starting January 1, 2027, WhatsApp and Telegram users in India must keep their accounts linked to an active SIM card as per a new Department of Telecommunications directive. The rule, aimed at enhancing security and preventing online fraud, requires continuous SIM binding to the registered mobile number. The compliance deadline is December 31, 2026, after which accounts without active SIMs will not work.
