Western Snowy Plovers Return to California Beach After 40 Years
Western snowy plovers have returned to nest at California’s Coal Oil Point Reserve after nearly 40 years. Since 2016, a conservation program by Santa Barbara Zoo, UC Santa Barbara, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service has released 212 birds. In 2024, 11 plovers were fitted with radio and Bluetooth trackers to monitor their movements and survival.
