ScienceWestern Australia's Western 5B Coal Mine Transformed into Lake Kepwari
The Western No. 5B coal mine in Collie, Western Australia, closed in 1997 and was transformed into Lake Kepwari by 2020. The lake, reaching 65 meters deep, supports swimming, boating, and camping. It is Western Australia's first successfully relinquished pit lake, created by backfilling, grading, and planting over 60 native species. Water from the Collie River accelerated filling between 2002 and 2008.
