West Bengal to Revise Bengali Textbooks, Replace 'Paani' with 'Jol' from 2027

West Bengal's government plans to revise Bengali language textbooks for government schools starting 2027. The syllabus committee, led by Kalyani University professor Debashis Chatterjee, decided to replace words like 'paani' and 'abba' with 'jol' and 'baba' to reflect everyday Bengali usage. The overhaul also includes adding Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee's life and reducing content on Mughal rule and Marxist philosophy. New textbooks are expected by January 2027.
