West Bengal's Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, decided that newly appointed teachers in state government and aided schools cannot directly engage in politics or contest elections. This rule applies to teachers appointed through the School Service Commission from October 28, 2026, onwards. Current teachers involved in politics or elected representatives are exempt from this decision. Several ministers, including Education Minister Dipak Barman, were former teachers before entering politics.
