SciencePhoto: HT WorldWarmer Conditions Accelerate Piñon Pine Deaths by 28% at Biosphere 2
At Arizona's Biosphere 2, researchers studied piñon pines under drought and warmer conditions. Twenty mature trees were split into two groups: one at natural temperature and one 4.3°C warmer. Water was withheld from some trees in each group. Trees in the warmer environment died 28% faster, averaging 18 weeks versus 25.1 weeks in normal conditions, indicating heat intensifies drought stress.
