ScienceVoyager's Plutonium Fuel Fits in a Milk Carton, Powers Signal for 48 Years
Each Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977 carried just over 13 kilograms of plutonium-238 dioxide fuel, roughly the volume of a one-litre milk carton. This ceramic nuclear fuel, divided among three radioisotope thermoelectric generators, has powered the spacecraft's signal for nearly fifty years, making it humanity's farthest active signal in space.
