Volcanic Lightning Peaks 1.1 Hours After First Flash in Major Eruptions
Scientists studied 16 explosive volcanic eruptions with a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of 4 or higher from 2010 to 2024. They found that volcanic lightning, intense electrical activity during eruptions, typically peaks about 1.1 hours after the first lightning flash. This insight helps better understand the electrical phenomena associated with major volcanic events.
