PoliticsUttarakhand to Repeal British-Era Irrigation Law, Introduce New Bill
The Uttarakhand Cabinet decided to repeal the 153-year-old Northern India Canal and Drainage Act, 1873, and replace it with the Uttarakhand Irrigation and Drainage Bill, 2026. The decision was made in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in Champawat district. The cabinet also approved new standards for private universities, requiring minimum built-up areas of 2,500 sq meters in hills and 20,000 sq meters in plains.
