In 1991, the 460-foot USS Algol, a former Navy attack cargo ship, was purposefully sunk off Shark River, New Jersey, to become the largest ship in the state's artificial reef program. Originally launched in 1943 as James Barnes, it served over 22 years in the Navy, including World War II. The reef project was funded by Federal Aid to Sportfish Restoration, supported by fishing gear and boat fuel taxes.
