Lean hog futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange fell to contract lows due to weak demand for US pork. High gasoline prices and concerns about pork quality have reduced consumer demand. Exports also declined as China faces oversupply and Mexico imports less. December lean hog futures hit a low of 57.425 cents per pound, down 27.5% since July. US hog slaughterings rose 1.2% year-on-year but are down 0.9% for the year.
