ScienceUS Planted 3 Million Acres of Kudzu by 1946 to Fight Soil Erosion
In 1933, the US government promoted kudzu planting to combat soil erosion in the South, distributing about 85 million plants to landowners. The Civilian Conservation Corps also aided planting, with farmers receiving up to $8 per acre in incentives. By 1946, approximately 3 million acres were covered with kudzu, though establishing it was sometimes difficult. Originally introduced as an ornamental vine, kudzu became widespread due to federal efforts.
