US DHS Ends Automatic Work Visa Extensions for H-1B and Others
The US Department of Homeland Security has issued a new rule ending the automatic 540-day extension for work authorizations, affecting H-1B visa holders, their spouses on H-4 visas, and asylum seekers. The rule removes the grace period for expired work permits while renewal applications are pending, allowing more frequent applicant vetting. It takes effect after October 14 with a 30-day comment period. Over 432,000 renewal applications are currently pending at USCIS.
