PoliticsUS Charges Maduro and Wife with Torture of Opponents and Americans
US prosecutors charged former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores with conspiring to torture political opponents and American citizens, adding to existing drug trafficking charges. They were captured in Caracas on January 3 during a US military operation and flown to New York. A judge denied Flores' request for jail release due to health concerns. Both face a minimum 50-year sentence if convicted.
