UPI MDR Charges Lower Than Debit and Credit Cards from October 15

From October 15, UPI will charge a 0.4% Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on Person-to-Merchant transactions above Rs 2,000, with exemptions for small merchants. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) stated that UPI's MDR remains lower than debit card charges (up to 0.9%) and credit card charges (around 2%). For example, a Rs 10,000 UPI transaction incurs Rs 40 MDR, compared to Rs 90 for debit and Rs 200 for credit cards, making UPI 80% cheaper than credit cards for merchants.
