Unpaid Traffic Fines of ₹49,194 Crore Could Fund Ganga Expressway

The Supreme Court revealed that unpaid traffic fines across India total approximately ₹49,194.05 crore. These fines include dues related to vehicle registration renewals, fitness certificates, pollution control, ownership transfers, and driving license renewals. For comparison, the Ganga Expressway Phase 1, a 594 km six-lane highway in Uttar Pradesh, cost ₹36,230 crore. The expressway was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on April 29, 2026.
