The Union government is facing increasing demands from states, especially larger southern states, for tur and chana supplies as prices rise. Officials stated the government aims to preserve its buffer stocks to control retail prices rather than distribute them for welfare schemes. The consumer affairs ministry holds 4.5 million tonnes of pulses, including 1.1 million tonnes of tur and 2.3 million tonnes of chana. Retail prices of tur dal rose 17.2% to ₹131.98/kg, and gram dal prices increased 8.66% to ₹92.86/kg.
