WorldUNESCO Report: 51% of Indian 5-Year-Olds in Primary School Instead of Preschool
According to UNESCO's 2026 Global Education Monitoring report, 51% of five-year-olds in India are enrolled in primary school rather than pre-primary education. This is significantly higher than the global average of 27% and has likely increased due to COVID-19 disruptions. Data from India's UDISE+ shows this share rose from 35% in 2019-20 to 60% in 2022, excluding Anganwadi and private kindergartens.
